Gloucestershire Pubs is a website devoted to the history of pubs and
breweries in the county. There are over 2,500 pubs listed and described in
the 'pub-list'. Many of these pubs are now just a distant memory.
The pubs are now arranged geographically. I have used the established UK
postal code system as a convenient way to sort the pubs into areas. This
enables a virtual pub crawl to be taken from neighbouring village to
village and clearly shows the concentration of pubs that were once tied to
a particular local brewery. I appreciate that the use of post codes
sometimes causes confusion, for example the Kings Head in Bledington has
an Oxfordshire post code (OX) and the Snowshill Arms in Snowshill has a
Worcestershire (WR) postcode. However, the categorization works well most
of the time. Please e-mail me if you can’t find the pub that you are
looking for.
There is a separate list of old Gloucestershire Breweries. This is
arranged in alphabetical order. This section of the website will be
updated when time allows.
I have recently written a book with my friend Tim Edgell about the old
pubs and breweries of Gloucestershire. This is now available to buy
on-line. It is illustrated with over 200 old photographs, postcards and
promotional advertisements and is sure to appeal to anyone interested in
the history of the county’s brewing industry.
Please let me know if you have any information on the pubs of
Gloucestershire that I could add to the website. Each pub has a list of
landlords. Could I add the name of one of your ancestors to the list? If
you have any personal recollections about a particular pub I would also
love to hear from you.
Finally a word of thanks to Dave Hedges, a fellow beer-lover, who in
recent months has given the Gloucestershire Pubs website a much needed
‘make-over’. The website is a non-profit making ‘labour of love’ which has
attracted ‘hits’ from thousands of people from all over the world. Dave
and I both share a passion for good beer and good pubs. We hope that our
enthusiasm is reflected in the contents of this website. Enjoy your
‘virtual’ pub crawl.
Cheers
Geoff
