Plough Inn, Wotton Road

The Plough Inn had an annual rateable value of £17.0s.0d. in 1891 but this had increased to £37.10s.0d. in 1903 when it closed at 10 p.m. The original Plough Inn was about 100 yards behind the existing pub which probably explains the discrepancies between the rates. The existing Plough Inn, however, was built in 1824. The 'old' pub is now a cottage. The Plough called last orders for the last time in the Summer of 2003.

Railway Tavern, Wotton Road GL12 8SR

It was built in the mid 1800's and was situated next to the railway station on the Bristol to Gloucester (Midland Railway) line. It was refurbished by Pubmaster in February 2000 and extended into the former flower shop which was under the same roof as the Railway Tavern. On October 13th 1928 there was an horrific train crash involving three trains when at least fourteen people lost their lives. The pub was used as a temporary mortuary. The 'Dursley Gazette' reported on October 20th 1928 that 'later on Saturday morning the dead bodies and charred remains were placed in an old coach-house at the Railway Tavern and throughout the weekend sorrowing relatives and friends paid visits to this tragic building to make what, alas, often proved to be unavailing search for clues to identity’. The present day pub sign shows an artists impression of a LMS Royal Scot class engine which has been elongated and has somehow acquired American style cow-catchers!

The Royal Oak is located just to the north of Cromhall at Bibstone. The 14th century inn is still trading. It has a 70 foot well in the middle of the bar area which was originally in the courtyard - when the pub was extended it became a focal point inside. White Horse

Arnold Perrett & Co's Wickwar Ales had a monopoly in the small village of Cromhall - all the pubs sold Wickwar Ales. Looking at the name of the landlord I cannot help wondering if he had a friend! The pub was near the village green. In 1963 the post and hinge for the pub sign was still in situ. The White Horse was eventually demolished in the early 1970's and a modern house now occupies the spot.

HILLESLEY

Fleece Inn, Hawkesbury Road GL12 7RD

The 17th century Fleece Inn was once tied to Witchell's Tetbury Brewery. Thomas Witchell did not own many pubs and the Fleece Inn was a rare outlet. Celebrated Ales, Wines & Spirits’.

Star Inn, The Chippings (Dinneywicks) GL12 8RT

The Star Inn is still trading but it is now known as the Dinneywicks Inn. It was acquired by Wadworth, brewers of Devizes, Wiltshire, in 1991 and the name was changed then. The 'new’ name refers to the name of a field at the back of the village. The owner of the field levied a toll because it straddled a highway. Another local story is that the nearby Dinneywicks Hill was a burial ground for horses in the English Civil War.
