Plough Inn, Wotton Road
The
Plough Inn had an annual rateable value of £17.0s.0d. in 1891 but this had
increased to £37.10s.0d. in 1903 when it closed at 10 p.m. The original
Plough Inn was about 100 yards behind the existing pub which probably
explains the discrepancies between the rates. The existing Plough Inn,
however, was built in 1824. The 'old' pub is now a cottage. The Plough
called last orders for the last time in the Summer of 2003.

Railway Tavern, Wotton Road GL12 8SR
It
was built in the mid 1800's and was situated next to the railway station
on the Bristol to Gloucester (Midland Railway) line. It was refurbished by
Pubmaster in February 2000 and extended into the former flower shop which
was under the same roof as the Railway Tavern. On October 13th 1928 there
was an horrific train crash involving three trains when at least fourteen
people lost their lives. The pub was used as a temporary mortuary. The
'Dursley Gazette' reported on October 20th 1928 that 'later on Saturday
morning the dead bodies and charred remains were placed in an old
coach-house at the Railway Tavern and throughout the weekend sorrowing
relatives and friends paid visits to this tragic building to make what,
alas, often proved to be unavailing search for clues to identity’. The
present day pub sign shows an artists impression of a LMS Royal Scot class
engine which has been elongated and has somehow acquired American style
cow-catchers!

CROMHALL

I

Unfortunately I have made no notes on where the information came from but,
for some reason, I have attached it to the details of the New Inn. No
other details at present.
Hunters Hall
Closed c.1890. There was an incident when the pumping gear on the last
coal mine in the village was destroyed by miners who had been drinking at

The
Royal Oak is located just to the north of Cromhall at Bibstone. The 14th

it became a focal point inside. The modern extension has obscured the

White
Horse
Arnold Perrett & Co's Wickwar Ales had a monopoly in the small village of
Cromhall - all the pubs sold Wickwar Ales. Looking at the name of the
landlord I cannot help wondering if he had a friend! The pub was near the
village green. In 1963 the post and hinge for the pub sign was still in
situ. The White Horse was eventually demolished in the early 1970's and a
modern house now occupies the spot.

Fleece Inn, Hawkesbury Road GL12 7RD
The
17th century Fleece Inn was once tied to Witchell's Tetbury Brewery.
Thomas Witchell did not own many pubs and the Fleece Inn was a rare
outlet. Witchell's were subsequently acquired by another Tetbury Brewery,
Warns. An old photograph shows the gabled end of the pub with the painted
lettering: 'The Fleece Inn. Warn & Sons. Celebrated Ales, Wines &
Spirits’.

Star
Inn, The Chippings (Dinneywicks) GL12 8RT
The
Star Inn is still trading but it is now known as the Dinneywicks Inn. It
was acquired by Wadworth, brewers of Devizes, Wiltshire, in 1991 and the
name was changed then. The 'new’ name refers to the name of a field at the
back of the village. The owner of the field levied a toll because it
straddled a highway. Another local story is that the nearby Dinneywicks
Hill was a burial ground for horses in the English Civil War.

Ram
Inn, Potters Pond GL12 7HF
The
Ram Inn is a 13th century building. The Ram Inn closed as a pub c.1968.
It is now a private residence and has gained fame because of its ghostly
apparitions. It is believed to have been built on a site of pagan
sacrifice. John Humphries, the Ram's owner, described when he moved to the
old inn to a Dursley Gazette journalist: "On my very first night in the
Ram, I was in a room over a grave where three children had been buried. In
the middle of the night I was grabbed by the hand and thrown out of bed.”

White
Lion Hotel, 51 Long Street , GL12 7BX -
Website
The
facade of the White Lion was substantially rebuilt at the beginning of the
last century by Arnold Perrett & Co. The original pub was a plain rendered
building but was replaced by a more ornate brick built facade. For many
years it was tied to the Cheltenham Original Brewery. At the time of King
George V Jubilee in 1935 an old photograph shows it to have its own petrol
pump within the brick arch which was once used as the entrance to the
stables. It is now owned by the Pubmaster group. It is possible that the
White Lion once brewed its own beer and perhaps the brewhouse still stands
to the rear of the pub but this has to be confirmed.
