Caledonian
(Brewery) Inn, 60 Swindon Road, GL50 4AY
The
Caledonian Inn last traded in about 1982. At the time of closure it was a
gay bar. It was also a Whitbread pub. For over 20 years the pub has been
allowed to deteriorate and is now in a very sorry state of dereliction. It
will probably be demolished when the Swindon Road is widened as part of
the northern relief road. With a little imagination it could have easily
been transformed into a thriving pub as it stands directly opposite the
front gates of the University of Gloucestershire (Francis Close Hall)

Carlton Bar,
Hewlett Street ?
It is
probable that the Carlton Bar was named after the old Carlton Brewery off
Hewlett Street (now Hewlett Road). The Carlton Brewery was acquired by the
Anglo-Bavarian Brewery. The exact location of the Carlton Bar, however, is
not yet known. It must have been very near to the Hewlett Inn. There is no
record of the Carlton Bar in 1891.

The Coopers
Arms was completely destroyed by a fire on March 26th 1909 and rebuilt on
the same site by the Original Brewery. The Coopers Arms is still licensed
and now trades as Cactus Jacks, an American theme pub. This is most
incongruous as the rebuilt Coopers Arms has a superb green tiled exterior
with the legend 'Wines & Spirits, Ales & Stouts’ still clearly visible.
Perhaps when the Cactus Jack concept is time expired it might return to
its proper role of a traditional English pub.

Cotswold has lost its hotel status and now trades as the Cotswold Inn. It
has been tied to Wadworth of Devizes since 1964. It was refurbished in the
early 1980's but I remember it as a favourite real ale haunt of the mid
1970's when the Wadworth ales were sold direct from the wooden cask. I
recall that the bar was long and narrow and it retained gas lighting. It
also got very busy and claustrophobic but it certainly had character.

Duke of
Sussex, 40 Swindon Road (was Pickled Duke, then Bar Cuba), GL50 4AS
On the
western corner with St. Pauls Street South. After many years of
languishing as an ordinary Whitbread back street local it was bought by
Mr. Cassidy in the late 1980's and for a decade traded as Cassidy’s Bar.
Arkell’s of Swindon acquired the pub in 1999. I had hoped that Arkell’s
would change the name back to the Duke of Sussex. During June 2000 it was
refurbished and new signs appeared heralding its new image - as the
Pickled Duke. However, it must be confessed that the name Duke of Sussex
is rather obscure so a slight modification was only to be expected.
However, an opportunity was lost as it would have been better named as the
Duke Dog which would have offered the opportunity for amusing pictorial
signage as well as being relevant to Swindon - the Duke Dog was an early
G.W.R. locomotive. But just over a year later the Pickled Duke sign was
removed and the pub was reborn as Bar Cuba. When I wrote to Arkells they
wrote: 'To compete on the High Street and fulfil a need of a majority of
customers in the young world of inner town centres, we have to attract
customers. We believe Bar Cuba will do this and sell beer and other drink
products.’ It appears that something went wrong as the pub closed soon
afterwards. Converted to residential flats in the late Summer of 2004.

On June 17th
1905 the Gloucester Journal reported of a meeting of the Gloucestershire
Licensing Committee who had concluded that the "house was unneccessary and
not easy of police supervision being up a passage.” Oxford Passage is the
small lane immediately to the east of the old Whitbread (Flowers) Brewery.
There is an old brick building along the passage in light industrial use
which might have possibly once been a pub (and brewery?).

Engineers
Arms, St. Pauls Road (New Ale House),
The landlord
in 1891, Benjamin Ratcliffe, is also listed at the Colletts Brewery Inn,
St. Pauls. It is possible that the brewery might have been on the premises
prior to 1891. The pub was of unusual design. It appeared that the
building was minuscule as entry was made through a small brick extension
which fronted St. Pauls Road. At street level the rest of the building was
concealed by a wall and high hedge. It was something of a surprise,
therefore, to enter tardis-like into the actual pub. The Engineers Arms
traded briefly as the New Engineers and more recently as the New Ale
House. Unfortunately it closed down permanently in 2002 and was demolished
in the Spring of 2004. Large cellars were revealed during demolition.

Hotel, High Street, GL50 3HJ
162 High
Street in 1830 directory. Situated in front of the Cheltenham Original
Brewery the Fleece Hotel was shamefully demolished with the neighbouring
Grammar School in 1967 and replaced with the ugly concrete shopping
precinct that is a constant reminder of the official vandalism endorsed by
Cheltenham planners in the 1960's. Rowe’s Illustrated Cheltenham Directory
of 1850 describes the Fleece Hotel: "adjoining Gardner's Original Brewery
is the Fleece Hotel, where every accommodation is afforded for families;
it is also well known as a Commercial and Coaching House. Mr Yearsley, the
proprietor, is also a wine merchant and possesses a stock of the choicest
vintages, the excellence of which has occasioned a well-earned celebrity
to attach to this hotel. On 'the road’ the Fleece Hotel of Cheltenham has
become a synoneme for comfort, good living, and the general excellence of
its appointments.”
