I have done a lot of research on the HESKINSes
of Wotton-under-Edge. They were there from the earliest parish records and
before. Two family members,
both by the name of Nicholas, grandfather and grandson, were mayors of the
town in the seventeenth century. The family was middle class, being
associated with the OKES, FORTUNEs, FRANCOMBEs, PHILLIMORES of Cam and
others. The last two to be buried, early in the eighteenth century were
both
described as gents.
There was then a bit of a hiatus until Francis HESKINS, definitely an
ancestor of mine, reappeared in Wotton-under-Edge early in the nineteenth
century, working as a brushmaker in the town. I have deposited a photocopy
of the apprenticeship certificate of henry Matthew HESKINS to his father,
Francis as a brushmaker, 1815, in the local history centre. The family
moved on in about the 1830s.
I have found references to Francis and (Henry) Matthew HESKINS in the Land
Tax records and I am sure that one of them is mentioned in a street
directory
as having a brushmaking shop in Long Street. On a visit to W-u-E I was
told
that it was believed that a greengrocers shop used to have a brushmaking
business. I think the shop is 34 in the main street and has a studded door
and an old fireplace near the front of the shop.

I'm researching SPENCER from about
1800 to 1857 (brick wall: from where, when, and why did they come to
W-U-E?) and HOWELL from 1863 back. And possibly FOWLER, since Hannah
Howell's middle name was Fowler and a Mary Howell (her mother's name)
married a Sam Fowler about 25 years after Hannah's birth.
