WOTTON-UNDER-EDGE, GLOUCESTERSHIRE,
|
Is a populous well-built town, pleasantly situated.
It is a borough by prescription, and governed by a mayor and twelve
aldermen. The cloth manufactory is carried on to a very considerable
extent, in this town and neighbourhood, one house alone (Messrs. Austins)
employing near four thousand persons. Here are two free-schools,
liberally endowed. The classic school is in high reputation under the
conduct of Rev. Mr. Cornwall; the English school is directed by Mr
Thomas Miles. The church is large and handsome. Here is a good market on
Friday, and a fair on 25th of September. Hugh Perry, Esq. an alderman of
London , in 1632, not only brought water to this town at his own charge,
but gave 1000£, to buy lands for erecting and endowing an alms-house
for six poor men and six women, and for establishing a weekly lecture in
the church; and Sir Jonathan Dawes, who was sheriff of London, gave
1000£, for relief of the poor, and putting out their children
apprentices. Wotton is distant from Gloucester nineteen miles, Dursley
four, Wickwar five, Tetbury ten, Thornbury ten, and from London one
hundred and eight.
Banker. - Vines Goodson, Esq. draws on Messrs. Glynn, Mills, and Co.
Birchin-lane London.

| Wortley, in the parish of Wotton,
had a chapel once, and in it a chantry. -- Tortworth, south of the Avon,
four miles west of Wotton, is a parish eight miles in compass,
remarkable for a chestnut-tree above 1000 years old, and fifty-two feet
in circuit at the trunk. |
